American Flag Cleaning

July 3, 2019

Is it proper to clean an American flag once it get soiled? Yes, a flag should be cleaned when soiled as it is disrespectful to fly an American flag that is dirty and soiled. Most flags can be washed, but some may have dyes that bleed if immersed in water.

US Code 8, Respect for the flag (https://www NULL.law NULL.cornell NULL.edu/uscode/text/4/8); states,

  • The flag should never be fastened, displayed, used, or stored in such a manner as to permit it to be easily torn, soiled, or damaged in any way.

The code indicates how a flag should be flown;

  • The flag should never touch anything beneath it, such as the ground, the floor, water, or merchandise.
  • The flag should never be carried flat or horizontally, but always aloft and free.
  • The flag, when it is in such condition that it is no longer a fitting emblem for display, should be destroyed in a dignified way, preferably by burning.

Most importantly, the code states,

  • No disrespect should be shown to the flag of the United States of America; the flag should not be dipped to any person or thing.

For the Independence Day Holiday, if you have a flag it should be flown. Enjoy the 4th. And if you have questions about flag cleaning, Jeeves NY is at your service. (https://www NULL.jeevesny NULL.com/contact/)
