Yellow Underarm Stains? How & Why

A brief history of yellow underarm stains.

It is not your perspiration which makes your shirt or blouse turn yellow in the underarms, it is your anti-perspirant. The yellowing of the underarms of garments is caused by a chemical reaction from the minerals, mostly salt, reacting with the aluminum in anti-perspirants.

One easy solution to prevent yellow underarms is to switch to a non-aluminum anti-perspirant. You can find reviews of non-aluminum deodorants that actually work at The Good Trade. (https://www NULL.thegoodtrade NULL.com/features/natural-aluminum-free-deodorants)

Another solution is to wear an undershirt to prevent your perspiration from getting on your shirt or blouse.

Once your garment has yellow underarm stains, they can be treated and most of the time removed, if your garment is washable. Please check the care label on your blouse or shirt to make sure your garment can be washed. If your garment is dry-clean only, find the best dry cleaner in your area to take care of this staining for you.

Do not use chlorine bleach, the underarm yellowing will become a brighter yellow.

The best solution is to use an oxygen bleach, such as Oxiclean. Fill up a sink with warm water and add a scoop of Oxiclean to the water. Allow to dissolve. Put your washable blouse or shirt in the water and allow to soak. One hour should work for lightly stained underarms and over-night would be best for badly stained underarms.

After soaking, wash as usual. This treatment should remove the yellowing in the underarm area. This method is safe with most colors, but always follow the instructions on the package of Oxiclean to test colored garments.

If yellow remains after this soak, repeat and allow the garment to soak overnight. Wash as usual.
