What is Fur Storage (cold storage)?

May 1, 2020

Fur, leather and suede garments should never be stored in a warm environment with either too much or too little humidity. Improper conditions may cause the skins of these types of garments to exhibit premature aging; simply put the skins will dry and crack.

Cold storage is an exacting environment which is set at 45° F with 45% humidity. These are the optimal conditions to preserve the life of fur, leather and suede garments. Even garments that have fur or leather trim such as Canada Goose or Mackage will benefit from cold storage.

Some luxury dry cleaning firms, such as Jeeves New York (https://www NULL.jeevesofbelgravia NULL.com/newyork/services/wardrobe-storage) have a dedicated cold storage vault for the safe-keeping of fur, leather and suede garments. This is important during the hot, sticky months during summer in New York City. Some furriers may offer this service if you are not in New York City.

All of your garments should be cleaned before being stored during the off season to prevent stains from becoming permanent. In fact your garment may not be accepted for cold storage if it is not cleaned first.
