Hand Cleaning / Red wine / Stain Removal

Impossible Cleaning

February 19, 2020

Some garments are not made to be cleaned by normal methods. Case in point is a pink wool crepe Gucci dress, trimmed with glass rhinestones, that a client brought to Jeeves New York. (http://www NULL.jeevesny NULL.com)

The dress was badly stained with red wine but traditional dry cleaning methods would be damaging to the glass rhinestones. The reason is that during machine dry cleaning, the dress would be subjected to tumbling during the drying phase of the process. This would cause the rhinestones to impact the machine during tumbling, which may cause cracking or breaking of the glass rhinestones.

Possible solutions would be to sew fabric over the rhinestones or to remove them prior to cleaning. Covering the rhinestones could not guarantee 100% that they would not get damaged and removal of rhinestones was not possible due to construction and cost.

Jeeves’ solution was to carefully hand-clean the dress to remove the wine stains. This proved to be a 4 hour project due the fragile nature of the base fabric. Each wine stained area was treated with cleaning solutions created by Jeeves staff for hand-cleaning. Jeeves was able to remove 98% of the red wine stains without causing issues with the base fabric.

Many dry cleaning firms do not provide hand-cleaning services as they do not have the experience with this very delicate process. Jeeves New York does provide hand-cleaning on a case-by-case basis.
