Risky Cleaning Advice

From time-to-time Jeeves comes across cleaning advice from magazines or news sources that is misguided.

This month Marie Claire ran an article titled, Your Everything Guide to a Sustainable Closet (https://www NULL.marieclaire NULL.com/fashion/a22237305/sustainable-closet-guide/). While Jeeves enjoyed the focus of alternative materials being used in fashion and a guide to eco-friendly Textile Certifications, the article went wrong was with the advice given about Garment Care.

One piece of risky advice given, was to attempt spot cleaning at home. Jeeves has seen far too many garments ruined by client’s well meaning attempts at stain removal.

Take note: spot cleaning, even on wardrobe items that are washable, can cause problems.

Rubbing on silk to remove a stain can cause the dye to be removed leaving a white area around where the stain once was. Also attempting spot cleaning can leave a “ring” from the use of water surrounding the stained area.

Jeeves’ advice, for garments that can be washed, use a laundry pre-treatment on the stain and then wash following the label instructions. For dry clean only items, do not attempt spot cleaning and leave this to the professionals. If you need advice about a stain, you can always contact Jeeves.
