Mold spores are everywhere, they are part of the natural environment and outdoors they help break down dead organic matter such as fallen leaves and dead trees. Indoors we need to avoid mold growth.

Mold spores that float indoors will not grow without moisture. Water leaks should be attended to right away before mold becomes an issue.

Humidity is one area that is often neglected when dealing with mold issues. While a finished basement may look dry to the naked eye, if humidity levels are above 60%, mold spores have adequate moisture to grow.

Fabrics will absorb moisture from humid environments and mold will start to grow on the surface. If left untreated white mold spores will blacken and cause permanent stains. Eventually mold will break down the fibers of the fabric and the garment will fall apart.

Textiles, garments, books and paper goods (including the cardboard album covers of your vinyl record collection) should not be stored in a basement. All of these items can absorb moisture and become prime sources of mold growth.

Garments affected by mold need to be cleaned to remove and destroy the mold spores.

If you have mold on your garments, check the care label. If the garment is washable, washing and machine drying will kill the mold spores. If the garment can only be dry cleaned, find a dry cleaner that has experience with mold removal.  Your local dry cleaner may not have the experience to handle mold contaminated garments.
