The New York Times published a great article recently, How to Buy Clothes That Are Built to Last (https://www NULL.nytimes NULL.com/interactive/2019/climate/sustainable-clothing NULL.html?fallback=0&recId=1RQEKw4lkRTkRT4l8Yz3P9PkcSX&locked=0&geoContinent=NA&geoRegion=NY&recAlloc=home&geoCountry=US&blockId=home-living-vi&imp_id=956586939&action=click&module=Smarter%20Living&pgtype=Homepage), which caught our attention. Jeeves has always been an advocate of the purchase of well made clothing and properly maintaining your wardrobe so that your garments last a very long time.

After reading the article we were surprised to see that the average American produces 75 pounds of textile waste per year, which is a 750% increase from 1960. Most of the textile waste in the United States is attributed to “fast fashion” by firms such as Zara and H&M which produce clothes to sell at low prices with high volume. Zara for example produces 20,000 new designs per year.

The “slow fashion movement”, asks us, the consumer, to purchase fewer, but better made garments. Missing from the article was the need to care for your garments properly which enables longevity.

The New York Times article had excellent advice for choosing well made garment, but Jeeves recommends that before making a purchase of a new article of clothing check the care label.  Can the garment be cleaned or does it need special care? Garments that are labeled “do not dry clean/do not wash” are problematic as caring for them will be almost impossible.

Part of proper maintenance of your garments should be routine cleaning. The closer the garment is worn to your body, the more cleaning it will require. Garments that have stains, soil or perspiration marks should be cleaned as soon as possible. Garments infrequently worn should be cleaned at least twice yearly.

Garments that are in need of repair should be mended sooner rather than later. Holes in fabric or open seams will worsen if the garment is worn without mending.

Jeeves New York can advise you on the proper care of your garments and can take care of cleaning and mending for your. Jeeves recommends the purchase of well made garments, and if you take care of them, they will be in your wardrobe for years if not decades.
